Handy Bags - The Handy Way to Buy Logs
Handy Bags are larger than our small nets but still quite easy to lift, move around and store. The bags themselves are made of plastic and are weatherproof in the short term but they are not 'waterproof' or suitable for being left outside.
Stack these 60 litre bags of logs safely and easily by lying them down on the widest longest face, one on top of the other. Store the logs in a garage, shed, outhouse or porch - away from wind and rain.
Available in birch or oak, these handy bags are the ultimate convenience kiln dried firewood. Birch lights quickly and gets the fire going nicely producing plenty of heat. Oak is a much more dense hardwood and will burn hotter for longer.
The logs in these handy bags are cut to 10 inches long. The diameter will vary. At 10 inches the logs will fit most DEFRA approved wood burning stoves. If you live in the Exeter smoke control area, these Woodsure approved Ready to Burn logs are suitable for use in a DEFRA approved appliance. To ensure the logs do not become wet and produce excess smoke, store them in cool dry conditions with good airflow.
We also sell a range of birch firewood and oak logs alongside these handy bags such as birch barrow bags (slightly larger), oak nets (slightly smaller) or the bulk bags which provide great value when buying in larger quantity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our standard handy bags contain 60 litres of kiln dried hardwood firewood, with logs neatly stacked inside a thick polythene bag. Each log is approximately 10 inches (25cm) long, making them suitable for most domestic wood burning stoves and log burners. A 60 litre handy bag contains approximately 2.7 times the volume of our 22 litre small nets, making it a convenient option for customers who want more firewood without ordering a large bulk bag.
Our handy bags are sold by volume, not weight. Each standard bag contains 60 litres of neatly stacked hardwood logs. The actual weight depends on the species and density of the wood, as well as its moisture content. Oak is generally heavier than birch because it is a denser hardwood. Measuring firewood by volume provides a more consistent way to compare quantities regardless of the type of wood supplied.
Devon Logs supplies handy bags of kiln dried oak and birch hardwood logs. Oak is a dense, slow-burning hardwood that produces sustained heat and long-lasting embers, making it ideal for established fires. Birch lights relatively easily and produces bright, attractive flames, making it an excellent choice for everyday burning. Both species are suitable for wood burning stoves, log burners and appropriate open fireplaces.
Birch logs naturally retain their distinctive white or silvery bark, which is a normal characteristic of this hardwood. Our kiln dried birch logs may have bark attached, giving them their attractive, rustic appearance. Birch bark contains natural oils that make it relatively easy to ignite, which is one reason birch is popular for starting fires. The presence of bark does not mean the logs are insufficiently dried. Always burn birch bark as part of the logs in a suitable appliance.
Yes. Our kiln dried hardwood logs are Woodsure Ready to Burn certified, meaning they meet the required moisture content standard of 20% or less for domestic firewood. Properly dried logs ignite more readily, burn more efficiently and generally produce less smoke than wet or unseasoned wood. Choosing Ready to Burn firewood helps you get better performance from your stove or fireplace while reducing unnecessary smoke and emissions.
Our handy bags are made from thick polythene, providing better short-term protection from rain and damp conditions than traditional open mesh log nets. However, they should not be considered completely waterproof or suitable for permanent outdoor storage. Prolonged exposure to rain, standing water or condensation can eventually affect the condition of the logs. We recommend moving your handy bags into a dry, sheltered location after delivery to preserve the quality of your kiln dried firewood.
Handy bags should ideally be stored in a dry garage, shed, covered log store or other sheltered, well-ventilated location. Although their thick polythene packaging offers some short-term weather protection, they should not be left exposed to the elements for extended periods. Keep bags raised off damp ground and away from standing water. Once opened, ensure the logs have sufficient airflow and remain protected from moisture so they stay dry and ready to burn.
Handy bags offer a convenient alternative to ordering firewood loose or in large bulk bags. Their compact shape and packaging make them practical for moving and storing around the home, although a full 60 litre bag can be quite heavy, particularly when filled with dense oak logs. We recommend using appropriate lifting techniques or transferring a few logs at a time into a log basket if the full bag is too heavy. They're particularly useful for homes with limited storage space.
The best choice depends on how you use your fire. Birch is generally easier to light and produces a lively, attractive flame, making it particularly good for getting a fire started or enjoying shorter fires. Oak is denser and burns more slowly, making it excellent for maintaining heat over longer periods. Many customers choose to keep both species available, using birch to establish their fire before adding oak for a longer, steadier burn.
